“La Valise” presents the work of Azeite by Leos, Frank Coronado and Teresa Poester as part of the group exhibition “Setting Space in Time” at the Umcebo Gallery from January 11th to February 9th, 2018.

“Landscape is the cultural representation of nature that surrounds people” –Andrea Urlberger.
In this exhibition the artists expressed, using different resources, their own way of interacting with the landscapes. Landscapes, either natural or urbanized, constitute the space (to work or play) in which everyone evolves. The movement is always represented, even when it is frozen, because each artistic rute results from the concern to set space in time. And the moment captured is unique.

Azeite de Léos
walks. He does not run, he wanders. Calmly he traced routes throughout Paris in order to face its ephemerality. Photography lends its direct relationship to
reality as the basis of his series, which is covered by “indecipherable drawings where he re-sculpt the word in multidirectional lines”. (Karla Carbajal – Sobreposição de processos inacabados. Paris, 2017.)

Along with the lines and colors, comes words, verses, poems, that he scattered mapped.

When visiting Azeite’s works we understand why « Anne Cauquelin reminds us that urban space is not an entity in itself, detached from the eye. If you want to see it, you have to go through it. It’s the path that reveals the space. It expresses the human presence and thus allows its perception.”(Andrea Urlberger – Parcours artistiques et visualités urbaines. L’Harmattan, Paris, 2003).

This series of drawings by Azeite resumes the idea of narrative, gathering photographic records with fragments of previous monotypes.

“Some photographers rely on a pictorial re-appropriation to rearrange reality through staging. The landscape becomes the setting for a mental scene that artists builds from his own perception and from reference to the visual arts […] the world that surround us becomes the setting of an act or a narration.” (Christine Ollier – Paysage cosa mentale – Editions Loco. Italia. 2013)

That is the case of Frank Coronado, who uses the red dot as a way to recall those places with a sensorial, physical and emotional connection, there are no people on the images, only the red dot that allow us to remember a place only by its emotional value and not for who was there. Those are very personal instants when we remember the place as it is and what we experienced there.

Teresa Poester always drew. Her drawing evolves and transforms with time and location. It was precisely the landscape that turned her process to the abstraction.

“She examines the different possibilities of combining the body gesture with the graphism of her movements recorded on paper […] following a reverse path to the traditional one: instead of transferring the landscape to paper through the drawing of observation, she photographs the textures of nature that could match with her drawings.”(Eduardo Veras – Parcours de l’artiste Teresa Poester. Porto Alegre).
